Discover Nick's Hamburger Shop

If you ever find yourself cruising down Main Avenue in Brookings, there’s a good chance someone will point you toward Nick's Hamburger Shop at 427 Main Ave, Brookings, SD 57006, United States. It’s not flashy, and that’s exactly the point. The first time I stepped inside, I noticed the counter seating, the sizzling flat-top grill, and the rhythm of short-order cooks pressing fresh beef patties in quick succession. It felt like walking into a living piece of South Dakota history.

I’ve eaten at diners all over the Midwest, and what sets this spot apart is its dedication to doing one thing exceptionally well: classic hamburgers. The menu is refreshingly simple-burgers, cheeseburgers, pie, and beverages. That simplicity isn’t accidental. According to the National Restaurant Association, restaurants that focus on a limited, well-executed menu often maintain stronger consistency and customer loyalty. Here, consistency is everything. Each burger is thin, slightly crisp at the edges, and stacked in multiples if you’re hungry enough. Regulars casually order a six-pack or even a twelve-pack, which refers to the number of patties, not a combo meal.

During one visit, I watched the cook press the beef directly onto the grill, a method similar to smashburger techniques that culinary experts praise for maximizing the Maillard reaction-the chemical process that creates that rich, browned flavor on seared meat. Food scientists from institutions like the USDA have long explained how high-heat searing enhances flavor through caramelization. You can taste that science in action here. The onions are grilled right into the meat, infusing each bite with sweetness and depth.

Brookings itself, home to South Dakota State University, brings a steady mix of students, professors, and long-time residents through the doors. Over lunch, you’ll hear conversations about campus events, local sports, and farming conditions. It’s more than a hamburger stand; it’s a community hub. Online reviews frequently highlight the nostalgic atmosphere and the affordable prices, especially compared to national fast-food chains. In an era where gourmet burger joints can charge double digits for a single patty, this diner keeps things grounded and accessible.

From a nutritional standpoint, it’s worth noting that these are traditional American hamburgers-simple beef, bun, onions, pickles, ketchup, and mustard. The American Heart Association recommends moderation when it comes to red meat, and that advice applies here as well. Still, enjoying a couple of small sliders in a balanced diet fits comfortably into most lifestyles. Portion control is easy since the patties are small; you decide how many you want rather than being served one oversized burger.

What I personally appreciate most is the transparency. You can see your food being made right in front of you. There’s no mystery kitchen, no elaborate plating. Just a hot grill, fresh ingredients, and decades of know-how passed down through generations. That kind of openness builds trust. In my experience reviewing diners, places that allow customers to observe the cooking process tend to maintain higher hygiene standards simply because everything is visible.

The location on Main Avenue also makes it convenient. After grabbing a bite, you can stroll through downtown Brookings, explore nearby shops, or head toward campus. Parking can be tight during peak hours, especially on game days, so timing your visit helps. That’s one small limitation to keep in mind.

People often ask whether it lives up to the hype. Based on repeat visits and conversations with locals, I’d say yes-if you value authenticity over trendiness. This isn’t a place for avocado aioli or brioche buns. It’s about straightforward flavor, efficient service, and a sense of tradition that feels increasingly rare. When a restaurant survives for decades in a small city, that longevity speaks volumes about quality and community support.

In a world full of ever-changing food fads, there’s something comforting about a diner that sticks to its roots. Between the sizzling grill, the straightforward menu, and the steady stream of loyal customers, this little burger counter on Main Avenue continues to prove that sometimes the simplest meals leave the strongest impressions.

  • Nicks Burgers is a classic stop in Brookings SD. Every year when visiting for Hobo Day our family comes here to eat. Three burgers is about the same as a quarter pound burger. I prefer to get all the toppings but any burger from Nicks is good. The restaurant is super cute on the inside and I love that you sit at the counter and can watch them cooking the burgers. If you are looking for a place to eat downtown, this is definitely a place you must stop!

  • Very cool spot. Unique space with good burgers. I like that they cook the burgers right in front of you. No fries, just chips. That's pretty cool. Give it a try if you are in town.

  • Nicks Burgers is a great stop for you and your family. We go there every year for hobo day. It is very nice because you can buy a whole bag, which is 8 burgers. The cooks are always working hard in the back. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a great time and some good food!

  • You have to say you’ve been at least once. My wife and I had the pleasure of eating here driving through town on a road trip. Well worth the stop and faster service than anticipated. They’re slider burgers so you’ll need at least a double or more than one. Old school shop with the griddle and everything made in front of you. Do one thing, and do it right, is the concept. Glad we stopped!

  • Old school burger joint, service was good. Atmosphere as expected, no fries, only chips though. Burgers were great, they are sliders, I got everything on them. Delicious!

  • This local joint serves up slider style burgers with a small town vibe around a retro counter that makes you really feel like a local (even though I wasn’t). To my right was an older fatherly figure getting his weekly burger fix and to my left was a family from Ohio who stopped in bc the mom wanted her kids to experience the place her own grandfather had brought her for burgers many years ago. Great nostalgia that may spark a memory even if you’ve never stepped foot inside before.
